Dragon Lovespoon Pendant (Silver)
Rhiannon - S112a
|
Silver Dragon Lovespoon Pendant, hand made by Rhiannon, the well known Welsh Jewellery Makers.
10x40mm 18in (45cm) chain Silver-Weight 5g
This lovespoon carries Welsh symbols: the Celtic Cross represents the history of Wales and the Church, the Dragon and Daffodil are national symbols (although perhaps the Dragon could also signify passion for some people). Lovespoons originated as a courtship custom. A man would carve a small spoon out of one piece of wood, and then present it to a girl as a gift. If she accepted the spoon, it was taken as a token of betrothal. The original lovespoons were intended to be worn secretly on a ribbon around the neck. And in many parts of Wales the Welsh word for a lover is still ‘sponer’ (probably from the english ‘spooner’).

14x33mm 18in (45cm) chain Silver-Weight 4g
This knotwork design is one of a series inspired by traditional Welsh folk-tunes and the dances which accompanied them – intricate patterns woven by a dozen or more dancers in repeating, unending cycles. The Welsh name for this design is ‘Pwsi Meri Mew’, a character in a children’s nursery rhyme. For the English name we’ve ‘cheated’ a bit and borrowed the title of a song by the group Catatonia.

Preseli Knotwork Pendant (Silver)
Rhiannon - S461a
|
Silver Preseli Knotwork Pendant, hand made by Rhiannon, the well known Welsh Jewellery Makers.
17x33mm 18in (45cm) chain Silver-Weight 5g
Preseli Bluestone is a very special kind of stone, so much so that it was taken from West Wales and transported across Britain to build a magnificent stone age temple at Stonehenge. It is a hard granite containing quartz crystals, but when polished it becomes a dark blue/green with white flecks, reminiscent of the night sky, which perhaps accounts for its importance to our druid ancestors. Rhiannon uses polished cabochon bluestones from the Preseli Hills set in silver to make this striking range of jewellery. The simple Dragon motif represents the ‘earth dragon’, a symbol of the earth’s power, as manifested in standing stones, underground streams and wells. The druids understood this power, which they regarded as a divine presence, and used it for healing, psychic communication and religious ceremonies. The Knotwork designs reflect a later period in our history, when the druids’ descendants became Christian leaders, the standing stones became high crosses and the sacred wells became healing wells.

Celtic Knot Pendant (Silver)
Rhiannon - S001a
|
Silver Celtic Knot Pendant, hand made by Rhiannon, the well known Welsh Jewellery Makers.
16x18mm 18in (45cm) chain Silver-Weight 5g
This piece is based on the typical Celtic Knot, formed from one continuous line, which appears on carved stones and in early Christian manuscripts. Rhiannon’s design has a beauty and balance superior to many larger and more complex designs. The pattern is continued on the reverse side, forming a true Celtic Knot. This design is part of our Celtic Knotwork Collection. Knotwork is probably the best known and most familiar style of Celtic design, but in fact it was a late development in Celtic Art, adopted by the Celts from Eastern countries, then developed and elaborated by Celtic Christian monks from the 7th Century onwards. The intertwined patterns of never-ending lines appealed to the Celts, symbolising their ideas of eternal life and the intricate relationship of humanity with both the divine and natural worlds.

|
Silver Welsh Cross Pendant, hand made by Rhiannon, the well known Welsh Jewellery Makers.
20x31mm 18in (45cm) chain Silver-Weight 5g
This is a typical early Celtic Cross of the type frequently found in Wales and Ireland, with a large circle. - Carved stone crosses are an important part of our Celtic heritage. The earliest date from as far back as the 6th Century and consist of crudely incised cross shapes on standing stones. Later high crosses, dating from the 8th to the 11th Century, are often carved on all faces with very finely decorated panels of knotwork, spiral patterns, animal figures and Biblical scenes.
