The Cat's face motif is based on the handle of a bronze bowl found on the North Eastern slopes of Mount Snowdon in North Wales. (Early 1st century AD.) The original can be seen at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff.

This brooch is based on a decorative letter taken from the Psalter of Rhigyfarch, an 11th century illuminated manuscript originally produced at Llanbadarn Fawr in West Wales. The manuscript is a fine example of this type of Celtic Art. Like many other Celtic treasures, it was preserved by being taken to Dublin, where it is now held by Trinity College Library.
